It is easy to have an idea and to think ‘well that would be a good thing’, but I have learnt over the last while that taking a good idea to something useful for others is quite the journey.
But here we are.
From here on I want parents and carers of young children who are looking for information about communication development or feeling concerned but not too sure what they should be doing or even if they need to be worried to be able to come to a place where they can access information, resources, tips and strategies. But also a community where people understand and can support each other. I have had families share that sometimes the journey with a child with communication difficulties can be lonely. They have shared that they feel that their kids ‘look naughty’ and that of course is not the case. Sometimes it is that they are just not understanding or able to communicate their messages easily.
I want to support and serve parents who are keen to understand and learn more.
Small Connections is a Speech Pathology service that is very different to traditional Speech Pathology services.
It is the result of more than 20 years working as a Speech Pathologist with young children and their parents and carers.
It is also the result of working within a population health model.
Small Connections aims to bring together population health, family centred care, parent coaching and early intervention. Hopefully what is created is of value to parents and carers of young children. I like to think of it as being someones “Speechie” friend. I was forever grateful for the knowledge I had when my kids were young, but I was also grateful for my allied health friends. I was lucky enough to have a built in support crew.
I feel very passionately that working with parents and carers is key to building and growing strong kids.
My vision is to create a place where families can learn from me and from each other.
We will learn actionable, everyday steps based on evidence.
We can build our community to problem solve, to reflect and take ownership of the role we play in supporting our kids development.
Small Connections is for parents and carers who are keen to learn, keen to support their kid’s communication and keen to connect.
Next week I will be opening the doors to Small Connections foundation Program for Parents.
So there is no time like the present…today is launch day.
